UC Davis Men
The West Coast Soccer Association is proud to announce the UC Davis Men Club Soccer Program as Team of the Week. The weekend began with a long drive from Davis to Reno on Saturday morning for the UC Davis Aggies. Reno has proven to be a tough place to play the last few years and UC Davis wanted to make sure they came out with a positive result. The game was back and forth in the first half as both teams created quality chances but were unable to find the back of the net. However, a few minutes before halftime Reno was able to get on the scoreboard, making the game 1-0. UC Davis quickly responded with a goal of their own as midfielder Justin Moreno leveled the game with a nice finish past the goalkeeper, making it 1-1 just before the halftime whistle.
The second half began and both teams were looking for a second goal. The keepers from both sides made a number of saves and the game remained 1-1. UC Davis was finally able to go ahead off of a free kick from just outside the 18 yard box. Midfielder Nick Gagliani placed the ball under the jumping wall and was able to find the back of the net, allowing UC Davis to go up 2-1. UC Davis then added a third goal late in the second half as forward Mykaiah Clermont struck a shot past the Reno keeper, securing the victory for the Aggies. The match ended with a 3-1 scoreline in favor of UC Davis.
After a successful trip to Reno, UC Davis turned their focus to Western Nevada. In the first 25 minutes UC Davis created a high number of quality chances, but Western Nevada’s keeper made a series of incredible saves which kept the score at 0-0. UC Davis was finally able to break the deadlock after a good sequence of play where our outside back Liam Joslin got in behind the defense and was able to serve a ball into an oncoming midfielder Ruben Mendoza who slotted the ball past the keeper. A few minutes later, UC Davis was able to increase the lead to 2-0. Midfielder Nick Gagliani was able to place a free kick in the top corner from 25 yards out, giving Davis the two goal advantage before halftime.
After the break, Western Nevada was able to get on the scoreboard early making it 2-1 within 5 minutes. After the goal, UC Davis pressed forward and was able to draw a penalty. Forward Brandon Sako stepped up and struck the ball past the keeper making it 3-1. As the second half went on, Davis continued to create chances, hitting the crossbar on several occasions. UC Davis was able to add a fourth goal late in the second half. A short corner led to a cross that found midfielder Samir Townsley, who was able to flick the ball into the back of the net. The game ended 4-1, securing the second win of the weekend for UC Davis.
